If you regularly have trouble getting to sleep, or staying asleep for long enough to feel refreshed the next morning, you're not alone. The NHS believes that sleeping problems affect around one in three people in the UK.
Insomnia is often triggered by worry or anxiety – for many of us, not being able to get to sleep, or wakening in the night, is a sure sign that something is bothering us. Often our issue is resolved and we return to our usual sleeping routine, but sometimes we find outselves stuck in a seemingly endless cycle of not sleeping, or waking up and not being able to get back to sleep. Lack of sleep can make us feel depressed and anxious, which in turn makes it more difficult to resolve the issue that made us anxious in the first place.
People with insomnia tend to spend a lot of time thinking about sleep, and this worry about not sleeping can spill over into other areas of their life. Again, this excessive thinking or worrying often keeps them awake, so they end up in a vicious cycle of anxiety, racing thoughts, and sleep deprivation. No matter how tired we are, insomnia can make sleep seem impossible.
If you are deprived of sleep, your concentration can be impaired, and you may find that you gain weight, feel irritable and emotional, and you could find it difficult to function normally: your reactions slow down and everyday tasks seem to take more energy.
However insomnia is affecting you, please know that I can help. I offer a complete treatment programme for insomnia and sleeping problems and will support you every step of the way.
